Bellringer: none. Students turned in their bellringer pages.
Today we briefly discussed the hyperinflation and economic collapse in Germany. Students read a speech from Adolf Hitler. They analyzed it in terms of what Hitler told Germans his plans were, and how he appealed to the German people as a person who could solve many of the problems they were facing. Students filled out a chart listing Hitler's plan, citing text evidence from his speech, and deciding whether his ideas seemed reasonable with an explanation as to why or why not. Students took their weekly quiz, covering material for WWI.

Bellringer: Students read about the period between the two wars with the passage below, then answered the questions at the bottom on their bellringer page. Students turned in their sheets for the week.
Students read through some situation cards that described conditions in the years between the end of WWI and the start of WWII- approximately 20 years. They divided each of the situations in three categories of government conditions, economic conditions, and social conditions, and we discussed these situations as a class. Students had time to finish working on their Lusitania articles and maps today. These are due on Monday, extra credit will be given for students who type up their articles or add extra details and pictures to their story.

Bellringer: Knowing that history is based on what has happened in the past, how is it that history changes? Use the article on the Lusitania that we went over together to defend your answer. (link below)
We discussed how the United States finally joined the war with the sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman letter as major factors. We talked about some of the battles, and discussed the end of WWI, the Versailles Treaty, and some of the effects of the war. We watched a brief clip on the Versailles treaty. Students were given an assignment to create a newspaper article as if they were writing the story of the sinking of the Lusitania when it happened in 1915. They also completed a map showing the two alliances fighting during the war.

Bellringer: What were the factors that led to WWI? (use the acronym MANIA to help you remember).
Today we covered what the war was actually like for soldiers, discussing some of the challenges they faced. We also talked about the traditional rules of war in Europe and how these rules changed during WWI using the powerpoint below. Students did a brief reading on some of the new weapons of war, then filled out the benefits and disadvantages of these new weapons. They explained how these new weapons may have affected war, and ranked them according to which weapons they felt would be the most decisive in battle.
