Today we continued with our class discussion and clips from Victory in the Pacific (posted yesterday). We learned about kamikaze pilots, the difficulty of distinguishing between soldiers and civilians, and the way American propaganda dehumanized the Japanese. We also watched footage and commentary on the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan.

Today we discussed the war in the pacific using clips from the pbs documentary Victory in the Pacific. Today we talked about how the totalitarian government of Japan had conditioned its people through propaganda to believe that being captured by Americans was worse than death, and the cultural belief that surrender was dishonorable. We watched the island hopping tactics of the U.S.

Today students read a timeline of the Holocaust, noting the slow erosion of Jewish rights in Germany. We then read 5 different accounts by holocaust survivors. Students worked in pairs to determine when the account may have taken place according to the timeline. Students watched a brief clip of an American soldiers account of liberating one concentration camp.

Students watched a short clip of Great Britain's 100 year commemoration of WWI. It gave them a sense of scale for how many people were killed during the war. (Youtube video link posted below). Today students presented their nation's ideas for peace based on the discussions and assignment from yesterday. We talked about how often what was in each country's best interests might not necessarily be a measure to create lasting peace.

We went through the powerpoint posted yesterday (wwi battles u.s. and outcome) on major battles in WWI, the exit of Russia from WWI and the entrance of the United States to the fighting. We then read an article from last year on the Lusitania. Students were tasked with taking the information from a nonfiction text on the Lusitania and turning it into a news article as if they were U.S. reporters living in 1915. These will be due on Monday. Students who type their articles will receive 10 extra credit points.
